Hi Stacy, this is a great question.

First I want to say how proud of you I am that you decided to get to a shelter and away from an abusive partner - this is such a hard and emotionally draining step. You must be very strong.

I suggest starting with a free appointment with one of our counselors - even if the only topic discussed is how to help you get some resources in your area.

In Michigan, we have many options for resources and I am not sure where you are located. Some states have numbers you can call to find resources in your area, such as 211 - for other locations your best bet would be to go to your local DHS (department of human services) office and ask them about job hunting resources, financial aid, housing, etc. Most of these programs are locally funded.

I also suggest developing a relationship with a counselor and if you do not have any income at this time, you probably qualify for medicaid. You can also sign up for medicaid at your DHS office.
