Is it possible for me to have been on the autism spectrum my whole life (I'm 31) and no one ever noticed?

I remember they wanted my parents to delay kindergarten because I seemed socially immature.  I never did get the hang of being 'social' and am frequently accused of being cold and having no feelings.  Even my husband says these things, even though I try very carefully and pick my words so that things don't come across badly.  Symptom checker popped it up for me, and so have tests on other sites.  Very scared for what this could mean, I have 3 kids, and very confused that no one ever thought about that or noticed anything even though I always choose alone over social.  Is it possible?

Hi Kat,

Many diagnoses go undiagnosed for a number of reasons. In order to find out what symptoms caused the symptoms tracker to identify this diagnosis it would be helpful for you to make an appointment with one of our counselors to discuss the results. Did you find the results to be accurate to your behaviors? Please let me know if you need help scheduling an appointment.

Warm regards,

Elttila Team

A lot of the results seemed to match up, I'm not very ritualistic in my routines, but definitely inflexible once a course has been plotted.  I still struggle socially, have always hated eye contact, have no friends of my own, except hubby, and that's been slowly imploding as well.  I also know for a fact I'm dealing with depression, have had many panic attacks and would bet my house I have some form of anxiety as well.  I think maybe it got missed because I was nearly always the quiet kid in the corner playing alone not bothering anyone.  Maybe parents/teachers were grateful to have a quiet kid around?  I am seeking help locally, but haven't had my first visit yet.  I'm not even sure if they will do a full eval.  Should I have my kids evaluated as well?  Are they at risk by heredity?  Sorry so many questions, I'm just scared for me and them.  Thank you for being kind, I literally cried.

Kat,

First, I am glad you have decided to seek help and hope you get what you want and deserve out of it. There is a genetic factor involved with autism and if you see your children exhibiting any signs or symptoms it would not hurt to get them evaluated as well. I am an intern here at Elttila so if you would like you could set up a video chat appointment and we can talk more about your concerns.

Yes.  I didn't get a diagnosis till I was 31 either.  I wouldn't say necessarily no one noticed, people pointed out all of my quirks and oddities all the time, but because of my high IQ and my mother being a psychologist, no one bothered with having me see anyone.

Liz, thanks for sharing your story, it helps to know I'm not the only one.  I guess they did notice, but what you said about the high IQ.... I was in all the gifted programs in school, they probably thought I was just quirky, awkward, etc.  Just different enough to be socially uncomfortable to have around, not different enough to warrant further investigation.  I had my first appt. with a counselor thus week, and it went great, considering I was terrified of the experience.  He's also going to talk to my kids, just to be safe.   Thanks for your insight, and all the best to you. :)
